Enlightenment? Ideas, transfers, circles, attitudes, practices Conference organised by the Werkgroep 18e Eeuw (Dutch-Belgian Society for Eighteenth Century Studies) in Het Pand te Ghent, Belgium, 22-23 January 2010
This conference sought to find an answer to the question what the Enlightenment was and perhaps still is. Since historians have been searching for Enlightenments other than the French avant-garde of the Eighteenth Century, research has disseminated into various national contexts, radical and moderate variants, and also into various disciplines, such as the theological, chemist's, or encyclopaedic Enlightenment. We are inviting scholars to submit papers grounded in certain ideas, transfers, circles, attitudes, or practices, going beyond borders and disciplines, and providing a wider picture of the era. We tried to find new entries to a period that is highly topical, but also trampled down by so many often even contradictory interpretations, that one should first ask which Enlightenment one speaks of, before starting the discussion. Should the Enlightenment be qualified as a contest of ideas, a communication process, a developing taste or lifestyle, an empowering culture, or a collection of experiences?
